This post delves into Airtel’s strategic move for powering 20 million smart meters for Adani Energy Solutions.
In a transformative move, Airtel Business, the B2B arm of Bharti Airtel, has unveiled a strategic partnership with Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) to power over 20 million smart meters. This collaboration positions Airtel as a key player in India’s smart metering program, a pivotal policy reform by the government.
Let’s delve into the details of this partnership and analyse how it can potentially benefit Airtel’s business prospects.
Airtel’s Role in Smart Metering
Airtel Business, leveraging its robust nationwide communications network, will provide reliable and secure connectivity for all smart meter deployments by AESL. The use of Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), 4G, and 2G technologies in Airtel’s smart metering solutions ensures real-time connectivity and uninterrupted transfer of critical data between smart meters and headend applications.
Strategic Technological Integration
Airtel’s transformative smart metering solutions come integrated with its IoT platform, ‘Airtel IoT Hub.’ This platform not only facilitates smart meter tracking and monitoring but also offers advanced analytics and diagnostic capabilities. The real-time insights and services provided by the IoT Hub empower customers with enhanced control over their energy consumption.
Order Book Overview
Adani Energy Solutions boasts an impressive order book of over 20 million smart meters from various power utilities, including those in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand. This highlights the significant demand and acceptance of smart meters in different regions across India.
Airtel’s Aspiration in the Utilities Space
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, CEO of Airtel Business (India), expresses optimism about Airtel’s NB-IoT technology playing a crucial role in the utility space. The goal is to connect and manage smart meters at scale with enhanced coverage, high reliability, and security. This underlines Airtel’s strategic vision to be a major player in digitizing utilities.
A Win-Win for Airtel and AESL
Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd., emphasizes that this collaboration with Airtel marks a critical step towards realizing a smarter and more efficient power grid. By leveraging Airtel’s nationwide network and comprehensive suite of IoT offerings, including NB-IoT and 4G LTE, AESL aims to seamlessly deploy its significant order book of smart meters across India. This collaborative effort not only empowers millions of consumers with real-time consumption data and control but also drives down inefficiencies in the distribution network.
Market Dynamics and Investor Confidence
The strategic move by Airtel to power smart meters aligns with India’s ambitious plans for a revamped distribution sector. Investors keen on Airtel’s role in the smart metering program view this as a positive signal. Airtel’s foray into this sector not only expands its business portfolio but also aligns with the broader digitalization trends in the country.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Airtel’s collaboration with Adani Energy Solutions marks a strategic leap into the future of utilities and smart metering. The deployment of NB-IoT technology positions Airtel as a key enabler in India’s ambitious smart grid initiatives. As smart meters become integral components of the power sector’s digitalization journey, Airtel’s role in providing connectivity and IoT solutions is poised to contribute significantly to the evolving landscape of utilities in India.
This partnership not only enhances Airtel’s business prospects but also reinforces its commitment to driving technological advancements in critical sectors. As the smart metering program unfolds, Airtel stands at the forefront of shaping the digital future of utilities in India.

Bharti Airtel Bolsters Its Network Footprint Under Rural Network Expansion Project
Bharti Airtel Limited has increased its network presence across 434 villages in the Banaskantha district, which increased the company’s network to 5,875 villages.
On April 23, 2024, Bharti Airtel Limited, one of the leading telecommunications service providers in India, announced in an exchange filing that it had deployed additional sites in Banaskantha district to strengthen its network.
The company further stated that the network expansion project in Banaskantha was undertaken across 434 villages covering an 8.8 Lakh population base.
This network expansion would directly benefit customers in the Banaskantha district’s tehsils of Deesa, Palanpur, Tharad, Vadgam, Kankrej, Dhanera, Deodar, and Dantiwada. The extension will make it possible for rural Banaskantha residents to easily access a dependable mobile network for work, education, and leisure.
Airtel has strengthened its ties to the state and increased capital expenditures to improve network connectivity for a flawless 4G, 5G, broadband, and fibre experience just this year.
The goal of the rural expansion project is to increase coverage in rural villages throughout the state and enable customers to experience the benefits of high-speed connectivity. The project will affect over 50 lakh people in fifteen districts in Gujarat, including Bharut, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Banaskantha, Surat, Ahmedabad, Kheda, Bhavnagar, Botad, Anand, Rajkot, Morbi, Vadodara, Sabarkantha, and Patan.
By 2024, Airtel’s nationwide rural expansion project will improve network connections in 60,000 communities. One of the company’s main emphasis markets has been Gujarat; with this project, the company will expand its network coverage over the entire state, encompassing 7,000 villages in these districts.
With the intention of increasing network capacity and extending services to more remote and rural locations. By deploying more capacity, Airtel has also improved its fibre presence throughout the state. The provision of new fibre capacity will support the increased demand for high-speed data services in this area. All major urban, semi-urban, and rural regions in the region—including highways, tourist attractions, and commerce hubs—are currently included in Airtel’s network coverage.
