Addressing False Calls and Fraudulent Calls

Addressing False Calls and Fraudulent Calls

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched the Sanchar Saathi portal to combat fraudulent and unsolicited calls, ensuring better security and empowering mobile users. This initiative targets false communications originating from both domestic and international sources.

Key Features of the Sanchar Saathi Portal

The Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) allows users to report suspicious activities like fraudulent communications and Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) via the Chakshu feature. Reports trigger actions against mobile connections, handsets, bulk SMS senders, and WhatsApp accounts. UCC reports are sent to telecom operators for resolution under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer’s Preference Regulations (TCCCPR-2018).

Enhanced Security Measures

The DoT and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have developed mechanisms to block spoofed international calls disguised as local numbers. Additionally, the TCCCPR-2018 framework empowers users to block or report spam through apps, SMS, or helplines. Violations lead to penalties, blacklisting, and service disconnections for offenders.

Introduction of Telecom Cyber Security Rules

The Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024, introduced on November 21, 2024, prohibit fraudulent practices such as impersonation and deceptive messaging. Violations attract strict penalties, ensuring greater protection for users.

Citizen Benefits

The portal helps users:

  • View and disconnect unauthorised connections.
  • Block or trace lost/stolen phones.
  • Verify the authenticity of mobile devices.

By addressing fraudulent calls, the Sanchar Saathi portal fosters a secure communication environment and enhances public trust in telecommunications.
