Closing Bell: Pharma and IT Stocks Stole Lead the Rally
The Indian stock market closed in green on August 28. IT, Pharma, and Healthcare indices were up more than 1% each, while Media index sheds more than 1%.
On August 28, 2024, both the benchmark indices, Nifty 50 and Sensex, ended the trading session in positive territory. Nifty 50 rose 0.14% to 25,052.35 while Sensex settled at 81,785.56 with a gain of 0.09%. The broader indices ended Wednesday’s trading session in mixed territory, with gains led by Large-cap stocks. Bank Nifty index ended lower by 134.90 points or 0.26% to settle at 51,143.85. The volatility indicator Nifty VIX grew by 2.33% to 13.95, reflecting a rise in volatility.
Sectoral Performance
IT and Pharma stocks shine during the session. Nifty IT and Nifty Pharma closed higher by 685.15 and 260.10 points, or 1.64% and 1.14%, to end at 42,394.40 and 22,989.10, respectively. On the flip side, Media stocks were under pressure and recorded a fall in Wednesday’s trading session. Nifty Media slipped by 1.41% to 2,118.60. Other indices which dropped the most included Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Bank, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Auto.
Top Gainer and Losers
Top gainers for the day were LTI Mindtree, Wipro, Divis Labs, Bharti Airtel, and Infosys, while Maruti Suzuki, Asian Paints, Adani Enterprises, Shriram Finance and Britannia were the top losers.
Oil Prices
Oil Prices witnessed a fall during the trading session on August 28, 2024. At 4:10 PM, Brent Crude stood at 78.35, reflecting a fall of 1.51%. The American Petroleum Institute (API) reports that for the week ending August 23, crude oil stocks in the US decreased by 3.4 million barrels, compared to analysts’ predictions of a 3 million barrel decline. The API revealed that oil stockpiles had increased by 3,47,000 barrels during the previous week.
